COLERAINE return to European action as the Bannsiders lock horns with Finnish side HJK Helsinki…
The club’s reward for winning the Irish Cup was booking their spot in the second qualifying round of the Conference League, where they were paired with their Finnish opponents.
HJK Helsinki certainly need no introduction as they are one of the most successful historic and successful clubs in Nordic football.
Here colerainefc.com gives a brief overview of HJK Helsinki ahead of the European double-header on July 23 and 30.
HISTORY
Founded on 19 June 1907, Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi – better known simply as HJK or “Klubi“ – has grown into Finland’s most decorated football club.
The founding meeting was held at a bowling alley in Kaisaniemi Park in May of that year, with their first ever competitive fixture being played against Ekenäs IF. HJK won 2–4.
Although founded as a football club, HJK expanded into other sports during the 20th century, including bandy, handball and ice hockey. As these sections developed, several eventually became independent organisations, allowing HJK to return its primary focus to football while remaining one of Finland’s best-known sporting institutions.
Their home matches are played at the Bolt Arena, located in the heart of Helsinki.
HJK have traditionally played in blue and white striped shirts, complemented by blue shorts and socks. The club’s crest has remained largely unchanged for almost a century, with only subtle updates to modernise it.
DOMESTIC AND EUROPEAN OVERVIEW
HJK have won a record 33 Finnish league championships, along with 15 Finnish Cups and six League Cup titles, underlining their status as the dominant force in the domestic game.
The club has also been a regular participant in UEFA competitions. HJK made history in 1998, becoming the first – and still the only – Finnish club to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage.
More recently, they have featured in the group stages of both the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League, gaining valuable experience against some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Some of the teams they have faced in European competition include Manchester United, Liverpool, Ajax and AC Milan.
They have faced Irish League opposition in three separate occasions – Glentoran (2003/04), Linfield (2004/05) and Larne (2023/24).
PAST PLAYERS
Some notable players who have represented HJK include former Ajax, Barcelona, and Liverpool attacking midfielder Jari Litmanen, as well as former Norwich City and Celtic striker Teemu Pukki, who still plays for the club.
Mikael Forssell, who played for the likes of Chelsea and Leeds United, started his career at HJK and was also an assistant manager of the club. Furthermore, Taye Taiwo, who was on the books at AC Milan and Marseille, had a brief stint at HJK.
Mike Havenaar, Aki Riihilahti, Markku Kanerva and Pasi Rautiainen are also fondly remembered by HJK supporters.
MANAGER
HJK are currently managed by Joonas Rantanen, who was appointed in at the tail end of 2025.
He has previous experience coaching within the youth set-up at HJK, as well as with fellow Finnish clubs Gnistan and Ilves.
