Another successful Community Cup

ELEVEN primary schools from the local area were invited to The Showgrounds to compete in the annual Coleraine FC Community Cup…

This year’s tournament – which was held on Friday (May 24) was kindly sponsored by The Newbridge Restaurant.

Two groups of six competed in the opening group stages, with the top two processing to the semi-finals. After five group games, it would be Millburn 2, Irish Society, Harpur’s Hill & St John’s who would progress into the knock-out stages.

First team players Lyndon Kane and Alfie Gaston, who were interested spectators, both kept a close eye for a player of the tournament.

Milburn 2 would overcome St John’s in a close affair with Irish Society getting the better of Harpur’s Hill in the second semi-final.

With nothing to separate Millburn 2 and Irish Society in the final, both teams faced the penalty shootout. If that wasn’t dramatic enough, the game was level after three penalties apiece, and it would be Millburn that would lift the Cup.

A double celebration for Milburn as their No. 18 Leo Johnston was selected by Lyndon as his player of the tournament.

We’d like to thank all schools who competed in the competition and hope to see them all back at The Showgrounds in the near future.

After the tournament, a donation was made to Melanoma UK in memory of the late Fiona Brady, partner of Gary Devenney.
