Bannsiders need to showcase ruthless streak: Shiels
DEAN Shiels says he is happy with the chances his side are creating but knows they need to show a ruthless streak as they face Dungannon Swifts in the Irish Cup tomorrow afternoon…
The Bannsiders have had 43 shots on goal in their last two games against Crusaders and Dungannon Swifts but only have one solitary strike to show their efforts.
Coleraine and the Swifts played out a 1-1 draw at Stangmore Park last weekend as Matthew Shevlin’s last-second goal earned the Bannsiders a point.
However, Shiels is hoping that his side can brush up on the execution of their finishing as they aim to reach the quarter-final stage of the competition.
He said: “We’re delighted at how many chances we’re creating.
“With the attacking players we have and the way we’re playing, we’re playing a really good style of play, we’re moving the ball well, we’re getting in behind teams, we’re getting through teams and we’re creating loads of chances.
“It’s just about that last wee bit in the final third.
“We like to give players the freedom when they’re in the final third.
“It’s about us brushing up on the execution and the finishing.
“Hopefully it’s gonna come for us and we can be a bit more ruthless when those chances come.”
Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Shiels also gave an update on several members of his first-team squad.
He stated: “Graham Kelly is still long term out with injury.
“Corey Smith picked up a hamstring and we’re assessing that daily.
“Aidan Tejada unfortunately got injured against Ballinamallard.
“It was good to see Alfie Gaston get some minutes after three months out in the U20s in midweek.
“There’s one or two other ones carrying injuries who we hope will be back for Saturday.
“The squad will be tested as we’ve a three game week coming.
“We’ve Cliftonville in midweek so we’re gonna have to utilise the squad as much as we can.
“Levi Ives went off with a bit of cramp last week but he should be fine for Saturday.”
Supporters are reminded that a cash gate will be in operation for the game, with prices set at £15 adults, £10 concessions and £1 kids with a paying adult.
