Irish Cup, Preview, O'Connor
Bannsiders won’t take Armagh lightly: O’Connor
MICHAEL O’Connor says Coleraine will be taking nothing for granted as they open up their Irish Cup bid tomorrow afternoon…
The Bannsiders welcome Championship side Armagh City to The Showgrounds in the fifth round stage of the competition.
Armagh – who are managed by Shea Campbell – currently sit 6th in the Championship standings and claimed the scalps of Loughgall and Glenavon in the BetMcLean Cup this season.
With that in mind, O’Connor knows the threat posed by the visitors, who Coleraine beat 1-0 in pre-season duty back in July.
He said: “It’s going to be really tough. We played them in pre-season and it was one of the hardest tests we had.
“You know what you’re going to get. They’re going to be direct at times but we know they’re a hard-working team and they are doing really well in the Championship.
“They drew 1-1 with Newry City and Oran (Kearney) went to watch it, but we will treat them like any other side by wanting to get on the front foot.
“We want to win things here and that’s why Dean (Shiels) and I have come on board.
“We are trying to bring players in so we are winning cups and challenging for leagues.
“It’s a quick way into Europe but it’s going to be tough but the boys are looking forward to it.”
O’Connor provided a squad update on several members of the squad – which included positive news for teenage midfielder Alfie Gaston.
“Alfie has trained today (Thursday) and has been on the 4G for the last two weeks running,” he added.
“He has joined in full training and is looking good.
“Graham Kelly is more longer-term and it’s more week by week and month by month with him.
“Jack Scott had a scan which came back clear so the next couple of days will see where he’s at.”
