COLERAINE started the post-Kenny Shiels era in fine style as they secured a 3-1 win away at Crusaders as Tony Curley and Wes Lamont took temporary charge…

Date:

Saturday, October 23, 1999.

Result:

Crusaders 1-3 Coleraine

Goals – Reilly (57 mins); Chillingsworth (70 mins) & McHugh (81 mins & 87 mins).

Report:

Coleraine made light of having no manager to record only their second league win of the season at Seaview on Saturday.

A double strike from Michael McHugh and another for striking partner Carl Chillingsworth was enough to send the Bannsiders’ fans home happy – a rare enough experience this season.

Crusaders started the brighter, looking to extend their 20-game unbeaten home run against a side without the influence of deposed manager Kenny Shiels on the sideline.

Crusaders took the lead early in the second half, Martin Reilly capitalising on a slip by Alfie Stewart to coolly chip the ball over the advancing Kevin McKeown. But Coleraine dug deep under pressure from the home side and Chillingsworth pounced on McCann’s cross to hammer home the equaliser.

Ten minutes later and Coleraine had grabbed a shock lead. Chillingsworth this time proved the provider, crossing for McHugh to head home at the back post.

The same combination stunned the Seaview faithful minutes from the end: Chillingsworth crossed and McHugh capitalised on a mistake by O’Hare to make it 3-1.
