Down Memory Lane

WITH the on-going help of club historian Hunter McClelland, colerainefc.com brings you the latest instalment of the ‘Down Memory Lane’ series as Coleraine beat Crusaders in the CIS Cup in 2001…

Date:

Tuesday, October 30, 2001.

Result:

Coleraine 3-1 Crusaders

Goals – Gaston (45 mins), Hamill (84 mins), Armstrong (88 mins); Arthur (24 mins).

Assistant manager Rory O’Boyle

Report:

Coleraine reached the last four of the CIS Insurance Cup – but had to come from behind to do it.

The Bannsiders started much the brighter but were found themselves trailing on 24 minutes when Graeme Arthur stroked home a penalty awarded when Stuart Clanachan upended Colin Magill in the area.

Marty Quinn’s side almost equalised a few minutes before the interval when Ian McCoosh smashed a dipping shot against the crossbar but they only had a short wait before going one better on the stroke of half-time with a Paul Gaston header.

Crusaders perhaps shaded large parts of the second half coming close through Arthur and Scott Millar.

That was until they were hit by a sucker punch on 84 minutes when Rory Hamill dispatched a strong right foot shot past Matt Kerr and then, four minutes later, Sean Armstrong – only on the pitch five minutes – sealed the win with a header.
