DID you know that the trophy Coleraine are playing for on Saturday night was originally the City Cup?

The competition was in league format, where each team played their opponents once each.

Coleraine won it twice, 1953/4 against Ballymena United and 1968/9 against Crusaders and Hunter McClelland recaps a 4-0 win against the Hatchetmen.

Report:

Coleraine made certain that this will be a record season for them by collecting a third trophy – the City Cup – with a convincing 4-0 victory over Crusaders at Seaview.

They went to Belfast needing at last a draw to avoid a test match with Derry City but made no mistake about winning. Dessie Dickson must take the honours for the second match in succession.

He scored a hat-trick, with Tony Curley getting the other goal. Victor Hunter was also a star in this game and made some vital saves. At the finish Coleraine were very sportingly cheered by the home fans as they left the field.
