Result:

Lisburn Distillery 0-3 Coleraine

Goals – Ogilby (13 mins), Boyce (21 mins & 45 mins).

Report:

THREE first half goals saw Coleraine record an impressive victory away to Lisburn Distillery this afternoon.

Despite a number of injury concerns over important players in the build up to the game, Coleraine started confidently and could have gone in front when Stephen Carson’s deep cross found Kyle McVey and his header was hacked clear.

Carson was the provider for the opening goal after 13 minutes. His corner picked out David Ogilby and the centre back, having evaded the attentions of his marker, powered in a trademark header for his third goal of the season.

The home side were barely in the contest, with the only thing Laurence McCormick had to deal with being a contentiously awarded free kick, which skidded off the surface and McCormick gathered at the second attempt.

Meanwhile, going forward, Coleraine were looking irresistible. Carson slipped the ball through to Darren Boyce on the left flank, who came inside and outpaced John Curran, before curling the ball beyond Matthews and into the net via the inside of the far post.

Aaron Black shot over after a corner wasn’t cleared, while Boyce held off a challenge before shooting over the bar with a left foot effort when he came inside off the right. A clever backheel from Boyce set up a chance for Gareth Tommons, but his effort on goal just curled the wrong side of the post with Matthews beaten.

The game was effectively over as a contest in first half stoppage time as Beverland launched the ball forward. The Distillery defence failed to cut it out and Boyce raced clear to slot the ball past Matthews for his second of the afternoon.

Distillery came out brightly at the start of the second half and substitute Gary Liggett hit the post after holding off the challenge of David Ogilby, but aside from that, and one off target effort when McCormick lost the ball under pressure from a corner, the Coleraine defence let nothing through and limited their hosts to optimistic long shots.

At the other end, Coleraine continued to threaten and may be disappointed not to have won by a much more convincing margin. Boyce headed over from Harkness’ corner and Hegarty’s cross created a great opportunity for Tommons arriving at the back post, who forced it wide.

A magnificent touch by Carson saw him clear of his marker Philip Simpson but instead of shooting himself from a difficult angle, he chose the unselfish option and tried to play in Boyce for his hat trick, only for the move to break down. Carson was giving Simpson a torrid time and after blazing past him once again, was clipped from behind by another defender inside the penalty area, but the referee waved away the penalty claims.

An ambitious long range effort from McVey dipped over as the game drew to a close and Coleraine can rightly be proud of a very professional performance in both attack and defence.
