STUART Thompson’s own goal with nine minutes left gave Coleraine victory over the managerless Whites in September 2009

Date:

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Result:

Coleraine 2-1 Lisburn Distillery

Goals – McClements (‘4 mins), Thompson own goal (’81 mins); Browne (’23 mins)

Report:

There was late night agony for bottom of the table Lisburn Distillery last night as, after floodlight failure, Stuart Thompson’s own goal denied the Whites a point at Coleraine.

Sub Gary Browne’s strike looked to have earned the visitors what would have been only their second point in nine games but Thompson could not get out of the way of sub Darren Boyce’s cross and the ball flashed into the net nine minutes from time.

It was tough luck on the Whites who had hauled themselves back from the brink.

Browne had come off the bench to replace the injured Glenn Ferguson after only 10 minutes when the Whites were already a goal down and on the ropes. But the former Glentoran striker fired a superb 23rd minute free kick past Davy O’Hare to cancel out David McClements’ sensational opener.

It looked like the game would be abandoned at half-time when the floodlights failed for almost 25 minutes but a technical problem was resolved.

Joint caretaker bosses Harry Fay and Tony Gorman must have been delighted with Distillery’s work ethic after a nerve-jangling opening spell when Coleraine threatened to run riot as they searched for the three points.

The Bannsiders were in front after only four minutes, McClements lobbing Phillip Matthews from 14 yards.

It got worse for Distillery when veteran Ferguson was carried off with an ankle injury. But the Whites battled back before their luck ran out with that Thompson own goal.
