COLERAINE were on the goal trail in 1976 as Terry Cochrane, Dessie Dickson and Frankie Moffatt got on the score sheet in a 3-0 win against Ards…

Date:

Saturday, September 18, 1976

Result:

Coleraine 3-0 Ards

Goals – Cochrane (’11 mins), Dickson (’50 mins), Moffatt (’69 mins)

Report:

Changes made by player manager Ivan Murray resulted in Vincent Magee, Jack Douglas and Des Dickson making their first appearances of the season and all three were satisfactory.

Dickson marked his comeback with a fine headed goal and only the crossbar denied him a second.

Terry Cochrane opened the scoring after 11 minutes, accelerating past a couple of defenders and firing a well-placed shot out of the reach of Robert Brown, signed during the week from Ballymena United.

Within a minute Ards should have equalised when awarded a penalty for Tony Hutton’s foul on Alan Larmour but Billy McAvoy hammered the spot-kick against the crossbar.

Coleraine added a second on 50 minutes when Dickson headed home Terry Mullan’s cross. Coleraine were now firmly in command and Frankie Moffatt underlined this with a third goal in 69 minutes.

Magee, after a long period of inactivity, had to produce a top class save in 77 minutes, coming out to block Tommy Armstrong.
