Coleraine 5-2 Glentoran

Goals – Devine (’13 mins), Tolan (’16 mins & ’30 mins), Loughrey (’51 mins), Keegan (’77 mins); McBride (’40 mins), Fitzgerald (’78 mins)

Coleraine earned their first league win of the season in emphatic fashion with a 5-2 hammering of Glentoran at the Showgrounds.

Jody Tolan hit two goals for the winners with the Coleraine scoring being completed by ex-Glens man John Devine, Kevin Keegan and Des Loughrey.

The victory was a sweet success for the Bannsiders after Glentoran’s controversial late draw when the sides met at the Oval in early September.

On that occasion, Coleraine were furious with an injury-time penalty award which gave the Glens a 1-1 draw.

On Tuesday evening, Devine put Coleraine ahead in the 13th minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box after Pat McAllister had been fouled.

Tolan added the second three minutes later when he gloriously connected with a Kevin Keegan cross.

The former Cliftonville striker made it 3-0 to the home team on 35 minutes with a delightful curling shot after Pat McAllister had released him with a long ball from midfield.

A mistake by Coleraine goalkeeper Kevin McKeown, who allowed a tame Justin McBride header to squirm under his body in the 40th minute, gave Glentoran hope before half-time.

However, any prospect of a Glentoran comeback was ended by Coleraine’s fourth goal on 51 minutes with Des Loughrey blasting past Alan Gough from 15 yards following a Keegan pass.

Keegan added Coleraine’s fifth in the 77th minute while Dean Fitzgerald pulled one back for Glentoran seconds later.
