First Win

COLERAINE Women’s fledgling group celebrated their first win of the season against a resilient and hardworking Banbridge side…

The fixture was played in an unseasonably chilly evening played in front of an excellent crowd of enthusiastic battle hardened supporters.

The third game in seven days meant the full squad was utilised in preparation for the game and having the luxury of 21 players being available meant it was a great starting block.

Skipper Shairee McVey opened the scoring from a superbly delivered Ellen Montgomery set-piece, this was followed by a really well worked team goal and fine finish from Kelly Bolton to double the arrears.

Soon after, Coleraine would go further ahead as McVey’s set-piece found Montgomery who got on the scoresheet.

Banbridge rallied strongly and showed resilience and superb character to stay in the game. However, Ellen Montgomery again scored a fine solo goal midway through second-half to make it 4-0.

Banbridge scored a deserved consolation goal with 15 minutes left but Cara Davies added further gloss to the scoreline to run out 5-1 victors.

Boss Gareth Scott said: “All in all a result to reflect the progress being made by all of the club and deserved reward for all involved so we keep building humbly, surrounding ourselves with good people willing to give all for the group.

“The girls are completely overwhelmed by the support we are receiving from the club and genuine fans on and off pitch, and excitement building as our journey continues without the opportunity to build slowly from lower divisions which would make progress easier to attain especially with the spirit and culture of willingness to learn within group.”
