COLERAINE were edged out on penalties in the Charity Shield final as the Bannsiders got valuable minutes in the legs...
A healthy Coleraine crowd made its way down to east Antrim but the Bannsiders survived a scare on nine minutes when Paul O'Neill's effort came back off the post as the linesman's flag denied Dan Bent from following up the rebound.
Ruaidhri Higgins' men quickly settled into the contest and threatened first on 20 minutes when Rowan McDonald's shot from the edge of the area flashed off target.
Soon after, Senan Devine was sent through on goal through a clever dummy and after his initial shot was blocked, his rebound was then cleared off the line by Aaron Donnelly.
Three minutes later, referee Ben McMaster played a good advantage after Ben Doherty was fouled at the edge of the area, with Devine's low effort forcing Rohan Ferguson into a low save.
Coleraine enjoyed a great spell until the half-time whistle as the chances kept coming as Jay Henderson's curling effort from 20 yards failed to find the far corner.
The final chance of the half was Ferguson's clearance landing at the feet of McDonald but the midfielder's instinctive lob failed to land below the crossbar.
As the rain continued to fall from the sky, the Stripes made a good start to the second half and carved out a chance when Henderson took a neat touch inside the box with his shot being palmed away by Ferguson.
Larne cleared their bench as they prepare for their Champions League qualifying tie on Tuesday night and they went close on two occasions when Josh Ukek's header was cleared off the line by Dean Jarvis, before Mark Randall's strike from distance was comfortably gathered by Lewis Webb.
However, Coleraine would have Webb to thank on 76 minutes after Larne were awarded a penalty when Ukek was adjudged to have been pushed inside the box by Cameron Stewart. The spot-kick was taken by Mark Randall but Webb dived correctly to deny the midfielder.
Neither side managed to break the deadlock thereafter as the final would be decided by spot-kicks.
Larne stopper Ferguson came up trumps as he saved efforts from Shevlin, Ben Doherty and Henderson, with the Inver Reds successfully converting three out of their four penalties to take the honours.
