COLERAINE return from their European commitments to secure a 3-2 victory against Portadown at Shamrock Park…
In a high scoring first-half, it was the home side who took a 16th minute lead as former Nigerian international Kevin Amuneke curled a delightful effort into the top corner.
However, by the half hour mark, the Bannsiders took control of the game and scored two goals in as many minutes. The equaliser arrived on 24 minutes as a strong run and cross by Trialist was headed home by James McLaughlin.
Two minutes later, the visitors scored again as Ian Parkhill’s corner-kick found an unmarked Jamie McGonigle and the striker headed home from six yards.
McGonigle – who finished as the club’s top goalscorer last season – secured his brace on 32 minutes as he latched onto Brad Lyons’ parried shot and stroked home.
Niall Currie’s men grabbed a foothold into the game on the stroke of half-time as former Glentoran winger Chris Lavery rounded Chris Johns and tapped home.
The second-half was a more turgid affair with Coleraine going close on two occasions through Parkhill. The winger struck the crossbar, before forcing McGaughey into a smart stop.
There was to be an unfortunate injury for James McLaughlin midway through the second-half which forced the striker to be substituted.
Portadown threatened to grab a share of the spoils but Ben Roy’s free-kick never seemed destined to trouble Chris Johns as Coleraine ran out 3-2 winners.
The Bannsiders will be on their travels next weekend as they take on North-West neighbours Limavady United.
