IT is the time of the year when fans return from all over the world to meet up with friends and family, as well as getting along to The Showgrounds…

But it is doubtful anyone travelled as far to watch Coleraine as Richard and Lyra Castillo.

Last Tuesday proved to be a g’day for Richard and Lyra who flew in from Australia to watch the Bannsiders for the first time.

The father and daughter were left impressed with their first taste of the Irish League as Coleraine beat Linfield 3-1.

Despite leaving 20+ degrees temperatures Down Under, they were happy to brave the cold as the red hot atmosphere kept them entertained.

Richard is married to Coleraine woman Sarah Watson.

After meeting in London where Sarah was a nurse, they married in Croatia before moving to Torquay – a satellite town on the outskirts of Melbourne – seven years ago.

Richard, an Arsenal season ticket holder, took advantage of a trip to Northern Ireland to visit family and friends, to take in Coleraine’s big match.

It might not have been Premier League action at the Emirates, but Dad and daughter certainly enjoyed the occasion.

“Yes, Lyra and I really enjoyed it, apart from the cold!” said Richard.

“The standard is comparable to the top Australian League.

“Both teams were well organised and I liked the variety of playing long and short, from the back.

“It is a really good set up at The Showgrounds and there’s a real friendly feel to the club.”

Lyra (9) who plays for Surfcoast Strikers back home, also enjoyed the game – even if she didn’t get to see the snow she was hoping to see!

“It was very exciting to get my photograph taken with some of the players,” said Lyra.

“My Dad and I were introduced to the crowd before the start which we didn’t expect.”

Richard and Lyra are now back home sunning themselves, but will continue to follow the fortunes of the Bannsiders from the other side of the world.

“I’d like to thank the club for their hospitality. We were very grateful,” continued Richard.

“Hopefully by the time we get back to watch another game Coleraine will have won silverware.”
