Kearney swoops to land midfielder Smith

COLERAINE FC is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Martin Smith on a short-term contract…

Smith was on the books of Sunderland from the age of 7 and was named captain throughout all age groups. The 22-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder who likes to get on the ball and score goals.

Smith has also enjoyed loan spells with Gateshead and Carlisle United, before making a move north of the border to sign for Kilmarnock for the 2016/17 season. The midfielder made 12 appearances in all competitions for Killie, and boss Kearney is delighted to bolster his squad.

“I am happy to announce Martin’s arrival,” Kearney said.

“We have a squad of 21 players, but we have four long-term absentees and David Kee is only back and needs more minutes.

“It was important to get a stop gap with real ability and Martin will provide that.

“He has good traits and will fit in well with our squad.

“He will need international clearance, so will likely miss out on Saturday. However, we hope to get him 90 minutes on Tuesday night against Institute.”

The Club can confirm that Smith will wear the number 8 shirt.
