Report:

COLERAINE bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to Glentoran as two goals in four minutes did the damage against Newry City.

The Bannsiders made three changes from that defeat at The Oval as Conor McDermott, Adam Mullan and Evan McLaughlin were re-instated to the starting eleven.

With less than sixty seconds on the clock, Coleraine almost took the lead as Matthew Shevlin held the ball up and found Josh Carson at the edge of the box. The midfielder hit a crisp half volley that clipped the top of the crossbar.

The visitors – who defeated Dungannon Swifts last time out – had their first sight of goal on 12 minutes as Dale Montgomery hit off target from 25 yards. At the other end, the ball would land favourably to Evan McLaughlin inside the area but he would be denied by the body of Steven Maguire.

Newry were hoping to hit the Bannsiders on the counter and this almost paid dividends on 20 minutes. A defensive mistake was pounced upon by Lorcan Forde and the speedster ran into the area and his curling effort had to be deflected inches wide of the far post.

Minutes later, good link-up play by Glackin and McLaughlin released Lee Lynch just outside the box and the ex-Larne ace was able to get a strike on goal but this was diverted wide.

Coleraine would go close again on 52 minutes as McLaughlin picked up possession 25 yards from goal and his dipping effort just didn’t drop in time to hit the back of the net.

However, the net would ripple two minutes later as the Bannsiders edged in front. A wonderful pass over the top of the Newry defence by Carson sent Lynch through on goal and he duly applied a delightful finish to net his first goal in Coleraine colours.

On 58 minutes, another Coleraine player would get off the mark as Dean Jarvis made it 2-0. A clever pass by McDermott found Glackin inside the box and his cross was stabbed home by Jarvis who couldn’t miss.

With a quarter of the match remaining, the hosts would be denied a cracking third as Lynch and Jarvis combined on the left-hand side to tee up Glackin inside the area, however, he would see a shot from an acute angle palmed away by Maguire.

Two minutes later, Conor McKendry attempted to get in on the act as he fired home from Jarvis’ cross but just when he went to celebrate, his joy would be short lived due to the linesman raising his flag.

The final effort of the contest would land at the feet of Shevlin but his turn and finish failed to land below the crossbar.
