Report:

IT was a job well ‘dun’ for Coleraine this afternoon as first half goals from Rory Patterson and Stephen Carson helped David Platt’s men avoid a potential JJB Sports Irish Cup upset against Dundela at Wilgar Park.

After a month without a game, it understandably took Coleraine a while to find their rhythm and Dundela had a couple of early chances, one a free kick which just whistled past the post and another shot which brought a solid save from O’Hare while all Coleraine could offer was a free kick from Patterson which was more dangerous to the houses beside the ground than the Dundela goal.

Things soon began to click into place though as good work by Dooley down the right flank saw him play Patterson in, but the Bannsiders’ top scorer was denied on this occasion by the Dundela ‘keeper who got behind his shot and blocked it with his legs. A slip from Aaron Canning allowed Dundela a chance to go in front, but they were unable to capitalise as their man dragged his shot wide.

They were made to pay for their wastefulness after 25 minutes as Carson’s cross from the left picked out the unmarked Patterson in the six yard box and there was no way he was missing from that range. However, Coleraine were almost pegged back immediately as a moment of indecision between O’Hare and Beverland saw the Coleraine number one caught in no-man’s land, but again Dundela were unable to make the most of their opportunity as the shot dropped wide.

Dooley slipped a shot wide after he got on the end of a long ball forward, but Coleraine did get a second goal to ease their nerves eight minutes before the break. An intelligent run from Carson coming in from the left wing saw him beat the offside trap and he raced onto a through ball and finished with ease to put some breathing space between Coleraine and their intermediate opponents.

The two goal cushion came under threat early in the second half as O’Hare was forced into a save early on and then Chisholm managed to ghost through the Coleraine defence and get in a shot, which fortunately rolled harmlessly wide. Neat interplay between Carson and Dooley on the right set the teenager away down the flank and he whipped in an inviting cross which was turned over his own bar by a defender.

There were several near misses for Dundela, who could easily have made life more difficult for Coleraine had their finishing been of a higher standard, while at the other end, Patterson took the ball round the ‘keeper but carried it too far and so wasted his opportunity, while McCallion hit the side-netting in the dying moments.

In the draw for the sixth round of the cup, Coleraine were handed a home tie against the winners of the replay between Nortel and Bryansburn Rangers.
