UNDER the crisp floodlights of the Coleraine Showgrounds, Coleraine FC Women hosted league leaders Carrick Rangers FC Falcons in a fiercely contested Division 2 clash…
Despite the tough challenge ahead, Coleraine came out with purpose and energy, immediately setting the tempo with aggressive pressing and a string of early chances that had the visitors on edge.
Carrick, showing the form that has earned them the top spot, responded with their own attacking spells.
However, they were met time and again by a resilient Coleraine defence, marshalled superbly by goalkeeper Hayley Mathieson, who was in inspired form throughout the night. Her commanding presence and sharp reflexes kept the score level going into the break, with end-to-end football providing great entertainment but no goals at half-time.
The second-half saw Coleraine needing to dig even deeper, and adversity struck early when right back Niya McIntyre and centre midfielder Lucy Hollies were both forced off with injuries after standout performances. Despite the setback, the home side continued to battle bravely, showing heart and grit in every challenge.
The deadlock was finally broken in favour of Carrick following a set-piece, as a scrambled finish from a free-kick gave the visitors the edge. Even then, Coleraine refused to back down, throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser and defending with collective determination until the final whistle.
Though the match ended 1–0 to Carrick Rangers Falcons, Coleraine FC Women left the pitch with heads held high, having pushed the league leaders to the limit. Special mention goes to Hayley Mathieson, who earned Player of the Match honours with a performance worthy of the top tier.
A massive thank you to Carrick for making the journey, and we wish you continued success in the rest of your campaign.
