Matchday Guide: Glentoran

COLERAINE take on Glentoran in Premiership action this evening as the Sky Sports cameras roll into town (KO 7:45pm)…

Sports Direct Premiership

Overview:

Coleraine reached the quarter-final of the BetMcLean Cup on Tuesday night following a marathon penalty shoot-out win over Ballymena United on Warden Street. After the game was tied 1-1 following extra-time, the fixture would come down to penalties as Coleraine won 18-17 in the joint-third longest penalty shoot-out of all time. Oran Kearney’s men will be at home to either Limavady United or Glenavon in the next round. The Stripes are currently 6th in the Premiership but know a win will see them leapfrog tonight’s opponents up to 5th.

Glentoran would be knocked out of the BetMcLean Cup by rivals Linfield who won 2-1 at The Oval. The Blues would find themselves two goals to the good as Joel Cooper netted a brace, however, Glentoran would ensure a grandstand finish as Jay Donnelly converted with six minutes remaining. Warren Feeney’s side are 5th in the table and will look to bounce back after a 3-2 defeat to Carrick Rangers in their last Premiership outing.

Previous Meetings:

In September, Oran Kearney’s men would come from behind to win at The Oval as two late goals saw the Bannsiders leave with all three points. Despite making a bright start to proceedings, Coleraine would find themselves behind on 24 minutes as James Singleton was in the right place at the right time to fire in from Shay McCartan’s free-kick. After several opportunities were wasted by the visitors, Coleraine responded on 79 minutes as Lee Harkin’s cross was headed into the net by Matthew Shevlin. The dramatic turnaround would then be completed two minutes later as Conor McKendry evaded several challenges before arrowing a strike into the bottom corner.
