North-West derby in Irish Cup clash

COLERAINE return to Irish Cup duty as they take on Institute at The Showgrounds (KO 3pm)…

The Bannsiders missed the chance to go top of the Danske Bank Premiership on Tuesday evening after a 2-2 draw against Linfield. However, Coleraine are in a good position to challenge for their first Gibson Cup since 1974 as they remain level on points with Crusaders, albeit having played a game more. As for the visitors, they are flying in the Bluefin Sport Championship as they lead the way by nine points heading into the split.

The Stripes reached the Sixth Round of the Tennent’s Irish Cup courtesy of a 7-0 win against Lisburn Distillery last month. Goals from Gareth McConaghie, Jamie McGonigle, Ian Parkhill, Martin Smith, Stephen Dooley and Matthew Kirk (2) helped ease Coleraine into the next round. As for ‘Stute, Paddy McLaughlin’s men overcame Knockbreda away from home. The two sides have already met in cup action this season as ‘Stute claimed the honours in the North-West Cup.

Coleraine manager Oran Kearney will be without the services of James McLaughlin through injury. Latest signing Aaron Burns remains doubtful, as well as midfield duo Stephen Dooley and Brad Lyons. Kearney is relishing the derby clash and knows his side will have to be on their game if they are to reach the next round.

“Institute are in a winning habit and they are having a cracking season under Paddy,” Kearney said.

“They are doing fantastically well this season and we know we will have to be on our game to get a result.

“It’s a North-West derby and we know it’s a potential banana skin, so we will need to be up for the game.”
