On the Spot

On the Spot…with Steven Douglas

OUR popular On the Spot series continues as defender Steven Douglas is the man in the spotlight as he answers a series of questions…

1. Occupation?

Scaffolder.

2. Favourite player of all time?

Brazilian Ronaldo.

3. Favourite meal?

Fillet steak with garlic fries.

4. Pre-match breakfast?

Two sausages, two bacon, one potato bread, scrambled egg, soda bread, black pudding, beans, two rounds of toast and tea.

5. Any lucky traditions?

I’ve the names of my children tattooed onto my chest and before kick-off I would always kiss my hand, tap their name and hope I get through the game and do them proud. I’m going to have to get Charlie’s name tattooed on soon!

6. PS4 or Xbox?

Hate anything to do with them – get children out to play with friends.

7. What teams do you support?

The famous Glasgow Rangers.

8. Three guests for a dinner – dead or alive – who do you pick and why?

Liam and Noel Gallagher – just to see if I could get them together for one last gig.

My wife Paula – I would need someone to cook and clean the dishes.

9. Favourite movie?

The Champ.

10. Your favourite moment as a Coleraine player?

Winning the Irish Cup – although I didn’t play, I partied like I had.

11. If you were deserted on an island, which Coleraine player would you choose to be with and why?

Lyndon Kane as he is injured he would be in no rush to leave the island and we could enjoy the break.

Winkie Murphy because we have doing islands for 14 years and he would beat up any intruders.

The Chairman as deserted island or not, it would be VIP and when we were ready for home he would get us lifted in his helicopter.

12. Who is your room mate on European trips?

Hard to believe but I’ve missed every trip since I’ve arrived at Coleraine. The last trip to Wales it was big Gareth McConaghie but he does nothing but acrobat so never again – I had to sleep with one eye open.

13. If you could be a Coleraine player for one day who would it be and why?

Dean Shiels – he has spent most of his life as a professional at some big clubs including Rangers so a day of making mega bucks doing a thing you love would be perfect.

14. What other sports do you play?

I have no time for any other sports with four children.

15. Who is your best mate at the club?

Winkie Murphy – we go back a long way.

16. What’s the secret to playing for so long and how long would you like to continue?

A house full of crazy kids who keep me on my toes and a young fit wife who keeps a big smile on my face. I will try and play for as long as I can.

17. You must have some fantastic stories from your playing days – can you tell us a couple?

In Spain last year on our end of season trip there were a few big water slides in our hotel so the boys were doing their rounds of the slides after a few drinks.

So at the top of the big one, we were all standing and it was my turn and I told the Spanish lifeguard to look at the sky behind him and when he turned around I ran and dived down the slide head first.

Waiting at the bottom were the lifeguard and two security guards who marched me right through reception and made me sign a form to promise I would behave and that I was barred off the slide for the rest of the day.

18. Would you like to get into coaching when you hang the boots up?

Coaching is a thing I’ve definitely considered and I started my UEFA B badges last year and hopefully I’ll complete it in the summer, but I still feel good and want to play for as long as possible.
