COLERAINE FC is pleased to confirm that the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council have approved outline planning for The Showgrounds redevelopment…

Causeway Coast and Glens Council’s Planning Committee has approved Coleraine Football Club’s plans to develop The Showgrounds including a replacement stands with increased capacity and modernised facilities.

The Chairman of Coleraine Football Club, Mr Colin McKendry, was delighted by the news saying: “The commitment shown by the Council to help the club deliver a state-of-the-art facility for the football community of the North Coast has been outstanding. This development will enable the return of major games for the supporters to enjoy.

“We appreciate the support of the Council in partnering with the club in our funding application to the Levelling Up Fund. They bring a huge amount of experience of delivering publicly funded schemes and we’re absolutely delighted that this application has now been passed and we look forward to working with them going forward.”

At the AGM Friends of Coleraine Football Club on Monday night (August 22), those present were apprised of the plans, developed by the Board of Coleraine Football Club, for The Showgrounds and how planning approval was one of the first key steps.

Mr McKendry went on to explain: “If we are successful in securing funding, the first phase of the plan would centre on developing a community 3G pitch, the demolition of the south stand and rebuilding it to an increased capacity with a centre for player development.

“This would come alongside an application for full planning for a modern stadium with the facilities to secure internationals and the Super Cup NI as well as Irish League football.”

The club also plans to make improvements to the entire grounds to enable an increased capacity of 8,000, who would enjoy a world class match day experience.

The plans detail the redevelopment of the Jack Doherty stand (including the demolition of existing buildings/structures), a new public realm, replacement club shop with car parking and associated works.

Mr McKendry concluded by thanking the club’s professional team and in particular GM Design for delivering the scheme this far.
