Quick start the catalyst – Shevlin

COLERAINE striker Matthew Shevlin would prove be the match winner yet again as his brace of goals helped the Bannsiders record a 2-0 win against Warrenpoint Town at The Showgrounds…

The 22-year-old would break the deadlock on six minutes as he cleverly lobbed the ball over Conor Mitchell after being found by Aaron Traynor, before making it ten goals for the campaign on 52 minutes as he was in the perfect position to stab home after good work from Stephen Lowry, Cathair Friel and Conor McKendry.

Speaking to Coleraine TV after the game, the ex-Ballymena United man admits he is ‘over the moon’ to have reached double figures so far this season.

“The main thing is that we got off to a quick start,” he said.

“That’s what we wanted and what we spoke about in the changing room.

“We were happy to get the early goal and build from there.

“I’m over the moon to have reached ten goals for the campaign already.

“I’m happy to be playing every week and coming with that is goals, so obviously I’m delighted.”

The January arrival acknowledged that the only thing missing was going home with the match ball after he had a goal disallowed for offside just after the hour mark.

“Aaron Traynor keeps telling me to make the run in behind when he gets the ball, so I made that run and thankfully I was able to chip the ball over the ‘keeper,” he continued.

“The second one was all Bushy (Cathair Friel) and Conor doing well on the wing and it was an easy finish in the six yard box.

“Those are the sort of chances you want as a striker.

“The only disappointment is I didn’t manage to get a hat-trick.

“I had one ruled out for offside, I think I might have been on, and I missed another chance which I probably should have scored, but I’m happy with the two.”

The Bannsiders face Portadown next weekend and the in-form striker knows he has to continue making the most of his opportunities in the starting line-up.

“We will be wanting more of the same against Portadown,” he stated.

“Every game as a striker you want to score in so that’s the ambition.

“I’m just happy to be playing every week. Knowing that you’re coming to play is the best feeling.

“But you know you have to perform every week to stay in the team with the quality we have in the squad.”
