Report:

COLERAINE set up a quarter-final date against Limavady United in the Irish Cup after an extra-time success against Carrick Rangers at Taylors Avenue.

Boss Ruaidhri Higgins made three changes from the BetMcLean Cup exit on Tuesday night as there were returns for Mark Connolly, Jamie Glackin and Jamie McGonigle.

It took until the 15 minute for the first effort to arrive as Levi Ives worked some space on the left-hand side. He centred the ball for Ben Wylie who fired a shot on the turn over the crossbar.

Both teams struggled to create chances on a difficult playing surface in the first half as Coleraine threatened again when Connolly retrieved possession and found Rowan McDonald just outside the box. He was able to pick out Mark Coyle but his effort failed to land below the bar.

However, Coleraine struck with the last kick of the half to hold the advantage. A tireless Wylie charged down Benjamin Buchanan-Rolleston’s attempted clearance, burst through on goal and picked his spot with a composed finish.

Coleraine went in search of doubling their tally as Joel Cooper tried his luck five minutes after the restart to no avail, with the Bannsiders then having ‘keeper Ryan Schofield to thank as he saved Daniel Gibson’s effort.

On the hour mark, Higgins’ men went mightily close to making it 2-0 from a corner kick. A dangerous delivery into the box by Glackin picked out Cooper who could only watch on as his header came back off the crossbar.

With nothing to lose, Carrick threw men forward and grabbed an equaliser with 82 minutes on the clock. A long throw into the box saw the ball land at the feet of Adam Lecky who steered a low shot into the bottom to force extra-time.

Coleraine had extra-time heartache on Tuesday night but they ensured there would be no repeat of that as they forged ahead on 92 minutes. A wonderful cross-field pass by McDonald picked out Shevlin who guided a header into the bottom corner.

Just after Schofield denied Paul Heatley’s near post strike, Shevlin fired Coleraine further in front thanks to the endeavours of Cooper. The winger managed to escape the attentions of his marker to cross the ball and Shevlin was in the right place to bundle over the line on 105 minutes.

Shevlin then completed his extra-time hat-trick as Wylie’s flick sent the striker through on goal and he made no mistake with a composed finish under the body of Lorcan Donnelly.

The draw has pitted a North-West derby as Coleraine are scheduled to travel to the Limavady Showgrounds on the weekend of March 7.
