COLERAINE progressed into the second round of the BetMcLean Cup after defeating Dergview 4-0 at The Showgrounds.

Making six changes from the league victory over Dungannon Swifts, the Bannsiders started the game brightly with the first chance of the game falling to Michael McCrudden who saw an effort go wide of the mark after misjudging Conor McDermott’s cross.

McCrudden along with Jack O’Mahony and club captain Stephen O’Donnell made their first starts of the season, with Martin Gallagher, Evan McLaughlin and McDermott the other changes.

McLaughlin’s impact was immense as he helped head home the opener from close range in the 11th minute as he was in the right place at the right to nod home Jarvis’s cross from the left hand side.

Moments later, Conor McKendry was the next to go close as he dragged his shot that was well created by McCrudden out wide.

McKendry was at the heart of things again, he picked the ball up on the half turn at the halfway line, drove at the Dergview defence, winning a freekick on the edge of the Dergview box as a result of his brilliant play. McCrudden hit the freekick into the wall then had an effort cleared off the line moments later by Mikhail Kennedy on 21 minutes.

Just after the half hour mark, Coleraine went very close to doubling their lead as McDermott dinked the ball over the goalkeeper from close range, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Dergview captain Matthew Buchanan.

After good link up play at the halfway line the ball fell into the path of Lynch, the number 16 carried the ball 20 yards before firing over the bar from just outside the box.

Shortly after this, Coleraine’s pressure paid off as McCrudden scored his second in as many games, peeling off two defenders to head in O’Mahony’s cross from close range in the 38th minute.

Two minutes later, Coleraine could’ve had a third as McLaughlin drove into the box with the goal in front of him and McKendry beside him. He chose to square the ball to McKendry, however, the pass was intercepted and a corner was the result of it.

As the second half got under way, the first clear sight of goal was in the 48th minute as McKendry hit the post from just outside the box via a curling effort, with McCrudden’s follow up being denied by the keeper from close range.

Just before the hour mark, Coleraine should their strength in depth by making four changes with Lyndon Kane, Josh Carson, Jamie Glackin and Matthew Shevlin being introduced for Dean Jarvis, Aaron Jarvis, McKendry and Lynch.

Coleraine were let off the hook in the 75th minute as Gallagher mis cleared his kick to present Caolan Maguire McLaughlin with an open goal. Fortunately for Gallagher, the ball was bouncing awkwardly on the edge of the box making it difficult for McLaughlin, who saw his effort go over the bar.

Coleraine went close to adding a third in the 77th minute as substitute Matthew Shevlin seen his effort well saved by Buchanan from close range. However, just a minute later Shevlin did get in on the act as he slotted cooly past the ‘keeper from close range.

As the game drew to a close, Coleraine went close again when Glacklin saw his left footed attempt from the edge of the area well saved by Buchanan. At the other end, Dergview’s second real attempt of the game came after a sharp turn by Stephen Curry 30 yards from goal saw him ease past the defender. His effort from the edge of the box was well saved by Gallagher.

Shortly after, Coleraine were four goals to the good as McLaughlin scored his second of the game and the pick of the bunch as he released an unstoppable effort from 25 yards, leaving Buchanan with no chance.
