SuperCup: Day One

COLERAINE representatives in the SuperCup NI tournament had a difficult afternoon as both teams lost out on the opening day of the competition…

COLERAINE 1-4 FINN HARPS

Today saw our under 13’s make their debut in the minor section of the SuperCupNI.

The game took place at a very windy Castlerock against Finn Harps. The young Bannsiders started very well as they took control in the early stages but failed to convert their chances. Finn Harps then took the lead right on the stroke of half time and Coleraine went into the break 1-0 down.

The boys regrouped and with a couple of changes Coleraine come out fighting in the second half. The early pressure saw them get back into the game with a lovely finish from outside the box by Emmett Morrison to make it 1-1.

The young Bannsiders kept pushing on to try and take the lead but got caught out with a long ball over the top to see them go behind 2-1.

Straight away a very close penalty call didn’t go our way and with time ticking on the Coleraine boys had no choice but go all out to try and get back into the game. Finn Harps took advantage and punished Coleraine for leaving too much space at the back.

Now 3-1, the young Stripes’ heads were down and conceded again with seconds left on the clock.

Well done boys and lots of positives. Heads up and we go again into the next game vs Larne at Ahoghill on Tuesday.

COLERAINE 0-3 NEWCASTLE CITY

Coleraine 2008 squad had a tough start to the SuperCup NI competition as they lost 3-0 to Newcastle City.

Newcastle scored twice in the first half with and one in the second half.

Speaking after the game, boss Stevie McCann commented: “It was a very tough game and to be fair they were quicker all over the pitch than us and more physical.

“The boys kept to the task and fought hard to the end of the game but when you consider a number of those kids at Newcastle have just been released by Sunderland and Newcastle it tells you the calibre we were up against.

“I said to the boys we have to dust ourselves down and focus on tomorrow’s game against Portadown.”

COUNTY REPRESENTATION

It would prove to be a great day’s work for County Londonderry as they tasted success in both the Junior and Premier sections.

Coleraine player Senan Devine scored for the Juniors as they ran out 3-2 victors against MK Dons.

Meanwhile, Kirk McLaughlin would net twice in a 4-1 success for the Senior section side against IDA Bermuda.
