Third Time Lucky

AFTER back-to-back postponements, Coleraine return to action as they face derby rivals Ballymena United at Warden Street this evening (KO 7:45pm)…

Danske Bank Premiership

Overview:

The Bannsiders have had their last two fixtures against Glenavon and Glentoran postponed as they enter a busy period of the season. Oran Kearney’s men still sit in fourth position in the table ahead of three successive away games as the Stripes also face Linfield and Carrick Rangers on their travels before the end of the month.

David Jeffrey’s men have also seen games called off lately against Glentoran and Linfield but still sit in a healthy 6th spot in the table after only playing 15 games. The Sky Blues were busy in the January transfer window after the acquisition of Ben Wylie on loan from Celtic, as well as defender Conor Keeley who signed from Cabinteely.

Previous meetings:

The two sides would meet on the opening day of the season with a first-half header from Kofi Balmer proving to be the difference at The Showgrounds as Oran Kearney’s men tasted defeat.

The Bannsiders would carve out the first chance of the game as Ben Doherty failed to keep a free-kick on target, before Shay McCartan tested the gloves of Gareth Deane at the other end. However, the deadlock was broken on 27 minutes as Kofi Balmer headed into the back of the net unmarked from Steven McCullough’s corner.

There would be drama before the half-time whistle as Joshua Kelly was sent off for a lunging tackle on Stewart Nixon. With a man advantage, Coleraine looked for an equaliser and threatened when James McLaughlin struck the post, with Josh Carson’s rebound being cleared off the line by Trai Hume.

The Bannsiders would have further frustrations late on as Stewart Nixon’s long throw found Stephen Lowry inside the box but the midfielder was unable to find the target.

Manager’s Thoughts:

“They are going really well and it’s always a tough task against any team David Jeffrey puts out,” added Oran.

“But it’s a game we are looking forward to and we’ll be well prepared.

“After two postponements it is great to be back in amongst it.”
