We need to be up for a battle: O’Connor
ASSISTANT head coach Michael O’Connor says Coleraine are eager to right the wrongs from their last visit to Carrick Rangers as the two teams meet at Taylors Avenue tomorrow afternoon…
The Bannsiders left the east Antrim venue empty-handed as Stephen Baxter celebrated his first game in charge with all three points courtesy of a 2-1 win.
O’Connor stated how it’s important that the Bannsiders get up for “a battle” this time around to avoid the same thing happening again.
“We were disappointed and from my point of view it was one of our worst performances as we just didn’t show up,” he said in a pre-match press conference.
“We had no fight that day, the goals we conceded were sloppy and they’ve brought in four or five new players.
“When you go to Carrick away…the first thing you have to do is roll your sleeves up and be ready for a battle.
“If we can do that then hopefully our quality will shine through which I think our performances have deserved in the last four or five league games.”
Coleraine played out a goalless draw against Cliftonville on Tuesday night and O’Connor said a change in shape made the Stripes a tougher nut to crack.
He explained: “We changed shape a bit against Dungannon, tried to get two uptop when we were behind and it seemed to work well.
“We have the personnel now to go with a back three or five, whatever you want to call it.
“The out-of-possession shape considering we worked on it for 20 minutes on Monday was super; from the front two Jamie (McGonigle) and Declan (McManus) how they pressed, then the three in midfield, the wing backs and then the back three.”
