COLERAINE Women’s Reserves put in a spirited and determined performance under the lights last night, but ultimately fell just short in a thrilling contest against a clinical Wellington Rec Women Athletic side…

The home team came out with real intent, pressing high up the pitch from the first whistle and putting pressure on the visitors. Despite Coleraine’s early energy, it was Wellington Rec who struck first against the run of play. They made it two shortly after, capitalising on their momentum and racing into a 2–0 lead within the opening phase of the first half.

Coleraine, however, refused to let their heads drop. A moment of quality saw Shannon Friel deliver a pinpoint cross into the danger zone, which Kyla McGivern expertly slid into the back of the net to reduce the deficit and reignite the home crowd.

Wellington showed their attacking strength once more before the break, adding another two goals before half-time to take a 4–1 lead into the dressing room.

After an honest and motivating team talk, Coleraine returned to the pitch with renewed determination and intensity. The introduction of fresh legs made an immediate impact and a dangerous cross was coolly tapped home by Lindsay Norton, making it 4–2.

The home side grew into the game with confidence. More substitutions brought added energy and creativity, resulting in a string of chances. The pressure paid off when Coleraine won a penalty after a foul in the box. Up stepped Kyla McGivern, who showed composure and power to fire home her second of the night and bring the scoreline to a tantalising 4–3.

With the clock ticking down, Coleraine pushed hard for a dramatic equaliser. Wave after wave of attack followed, and the team showed real heart and desire. However, tensions flared in the final minutes, and a red card to Coleraine halted the comeback attempt, bringing a dramatic match to a frustrating close.

Despite the result, Coleraine FC Women’s Reserves showed incredible fight, character, and attacking flair. A big thank you to Wellington Rec for making the journey, and we wish them all the best for the rest of their season.
