We want to finish the job: Shiels
DEAN Shiels says there is a strong determination in the Coleraine camp to get the positive result they need to cement their top-six status for the post-split fixtures…
The Bannsiders know they will finish in the upper-half of the table if they can avoid defeat against the Ports at The Showgrounds tomorrow afternoon.
Despite knowing a draw is all they need to reach their objective, Shiels remarked that they will be doing all they can to win the contest.
He said: “I think it’s only one defeat in nine league games, which is really tough in this league, especially with the challenge each team possesses.
“Portadown will be another difficult challenge at the weekend with the threats that they have.
“They are having a really good season…but it’s probably just the last hurdle for us in regards to putting ourselves in a really good position over the last few weeks.
“We have worked ever so hard, played really well to get us into this position and now it’s just about finishing the job.
“If the fans can help us get over the line, and they’re a big part of what we’re doing here, it will be really important for us.”
Shiels provided an update in terms of squad availability for the fixture, with wingers Jamie McGonigle, Corey Smith and Kyle Spence all doubts due to injury.
“Jamie McGonigle is struggling with his knee,” he continued.
“It’s been an ongoing problem all season for Jamie, really.
“It’s been a bit stop-start for him…so it would be good to get him back.
“Kyle Spence went down the other night and it’s not looking too great in regards to availability any time soon.
“But we’ll assess that and Corey Smith went off with a knock that’s being nursed.
“It’s about getting ourselves ready and when you play a three-game week, it’s tough and some of the players covered large distances and that’s why we tried to freshen it up.
“We will try and freshen it up again on Saturday.”
