Report:

AN Ian Parkhill double plus strikes from James McLaughlin and Darren McCauley ensured an away day win for Coleraine over Warrenpoint.

Coleraine made a terrific start to proceedings as they took the lead inside the opening three minutes at Milltown. Ruairi Harkin picked up possession at the edge of the box and found Darren McCauley with a superb pass. The midfielder, who scored a great hat-trick last weekend, had the vision to find James McLaughlin and he pounced from close range.

The home side, who came into today’s encounter on the back of nine straight league defeats, threatened on two occasions through Mark Hughes, but he hit his first effort over the bar, before dragging the second shot wide on 10 minutes.

The Bannsiders were looking dangerous every time they went forward with McLaughlin and McGonigle being a menace to the Warrenpoint defence. McGonigle cut inside and hit an effort straight at the ‘keeper, before McLaughlin volleyed wide and had a goal bound effort blocked by ‘Point captain John Boyle.

The visitors were enjoying the lion’s share of possession but failed to create any clear cut opportunities and nearly conceded as Jordan Dane was denied by Michael Doherty after a rare Warrenpoint attack.

However, the Stripes were able to add to their lead on the stroke of half-time as Johnny Watt played a great ball into the path of McGonigle. The striker had the ability to hold the ball up and he played a delightful ball into the path of Ian Parkhill and he slotted home with ease.

Oran Kearney’s men started the second-half as they ended the first as Parkhill’s cross was flicked on by McLaughlin and McCauley nipped in to poke past the ‘keeper.

Warrenpoint substitute Roy Kierans had the visitors first shot after the interval but Doherty made a good save. The Stripes made it 4-0 in remarkable fashion as Brad Lyons, who reverted to a right-back role following a knock to Johnny Watt, slid in on his marker and the ball landed to Parkhill. The Ballymoney man went on a surging run from the halfway line and drilled a shot into the top corner for a well earned brace.

The Bannsiders nearly made it 5-0 on 82 minutes as Neil McCafferty’s shot was parried by Shanahan, but the ‘keeper was alert to block the follow-up from McGonigle as the Stripes sealed a deserved three points.
