COLERAINE would travel over the mountain to face Limavady United in the fifth round of the Irish Cup, with Stephen Carson the match winner…

Date:

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Result:

Limavady United 1-2 Coleraine

Goals – McCaughan (’90 mins); Knight (’33 mins), Carson (’66 mins)

Report:

Coleraine winger Stephen Carson grabbed the goal that settled this derby cup tie.

Limavady United were resilient and tenacious, but the Bannsiders carried too much fire power in the end.

Leon Knight shot last season’s beaten semi-finalists into a first-half lead with a well executed penalty and as Coleraine displayed more menace in the second period, Carson collected the second after true showmanship and a deft touch by Knight.

United sub Conleth McCaughan pulled one back in injury time, but it was not enough.

Coleraine manager David Platt praised is players for overcoming gutsy United, saying: “They made it difficult for us, but our patience paid off.”

David Scullion headed a Carson cross wide from six yards on 26 minutes and Knight later crashed a drive against the bar with keeper Michael Doherty beaten.

Early in the second-half Carson set up Scullion, but after displaying breathtaking skill, he shot straight at Doherty.

Carson plundered his fourth goal of the season from 12 yards on 66 minutes after Knight had flipped the ball over the defence to present him with the opening.

United struck deep in injury time, but it was little more than a consolation effort.
