Report:

COLERAINE bowed out of this year’s North-West Senior Cup as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Dergview at The Showgrounds.

Dergview almost made the perfect start by bagging in the opening minute as ex-Coleraine midfielder Matthew Kirk was allowed to turn inside the area but his shot drifted wide.

In a scrappy opening, the Stripes carved out their first chance on goal as Jamie Glackin teed up Ben Doherty but the midfielder was unable to find the target. On 23 minutes, the hosts would threaten once again as James McLaughlin took a neat first touch before firing wide.

Just after the hour mark, Bannsiders stopper Martin Gallagher was called into action to deny Graham Young’s well driven free-kick. However, the deadlock would be broken on 43 minutes as Gallagher brought down McCarron inside the box, with the same player composing himself to blast home the spot kick.

Ivan Sproule’s men would double their lead just three minutes into the second-half and in spectacular style as Young let fly from distance that gave Gallagher no chance.  Coleraine looked for an instant response and it almost arrived four minutes later as McLaughlin was sent through on goal but he was unable to find the target.

Dergview will feel they should have added a third just before the hour mark as neat play resulted in full-back Adam Buchanan testing Gallagher down low to his left-hand-side.

Just seconds after Paul Wells made a superb stop to deny Curtis Allen’s header from finding the back of the net, Coleraine were awarded a penalty as the ball struck the arm of Dergview skipper Blaine Burns. Regular penalty taker Ben Doherty made no mistake as he arrowed the ball into the back of the net.

Four minutes later, the League Cup holders thought they had grabbed an equaliser as substitute Adam Kirk played a neat through ball into the path of Doherty but he unable to steer the ball inside the far post. On 67 minutes, ex-Coleraine goalkeeper Wells was alert to deny Lyndon Kane from close range after the full-back robbed Garth Falconer in possession.

The next chance would arrive six minutes from the end as Stephen O’Donnell – who was making his 100th appearance for the club – could only nod wide from Glackin’s corner kick.

The Bannsiders would come up short in a bid to find an equaliser as Dergview booked their spot in the final next weekend.
