COLERAINE would be forced to pay the consequences of a first-half red card as they were held to a goalless draw by Institute back in August…

Date:

Result:

Coleraine 0-0 Institute

Report:

COLERAINE would draw for the second successive home fixture as they drew a blank against Institute.

Coleraine started like a team bang on confidence and threatened inside the first minute as Ben Doherty fired wide after 44 seconds, before Aaron Canning’s header was cleared off the line by an alert Brendan McLaughlin.

The visitors began to grow into the game and Coleraine ‘keeper Chris Johns was called into action to keep out Joe McCready’s effort from 25 yards.

On 12 minutes, the deadlock was almost broken as Doherty released the run of Glackin. The midfielder looked up and spotted the run of Josh Carson and his lay off was fired over by Doherty from the edge of the area.

Just after the half hour mark, a throw-in found Gareth Brown in space and the lively midfielder spotted Chris Johns off the line, but his long range effort was kept out.

The Bannsiders were reduced to 10 men on 41 minutes as Eoin Bradley was adjudged to have elbowed Thomas McBride in an off the ball incident. Stute almost made that advantage count two minutes later as a free-kick delivery from Raymond Foy was headed over by McCready.

Coleraine boss Oran Kearney brought on Ian Parkhill at half-time and it almost proved to be a masterstroke as the winger latched onto Glackin’s clever pass, but his effort was blocked by the Institute defence.

Stute – who are still looking for a permanent first-team boss – thought they had taken the lead on 53 minutes as Foy chested the ball down and hit a shot on the turn that trickled wide of the far post.

The Bannsiders would lay siege on the Institute goal for a ten minute spell as Aaron Canning’s header was blocked, Doherty’s strike tipped over, before Josh Carson arrowed wide of the target. At the other end, a dangerous free-kick from Joe McCready was deflected inches wide.

On 71 minutes, Coleraine were presented with their best chance of the match as a superb through ball by Carson found the run of Doherty, but the midfielder could only smash the post from eight yards.

Emmett McGuckin was also introduced from the bench in a bid to find a winner and it almost arrived with virtually the last kick of the match as O’Donnell’s header from a corner was saved on the line by Wells.

A draw for the Bannsiders who now turn their focus to the BetMcLean League Cup on Tuesday night.
