COLERAINE slipped to second on goal difference in the Danske Bank Premiership after a 2-0 defeat against Institute at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium…

First half goals from Shaun Leppard and a super effort from Gareth Brown sealed a deserved three points for Sean Connor’s Institute side.

Coleraine opted for two changes from the side that defeated Carrick Rangers last week. Aaron Canning missed out through suspension whilst Ian Parkhill dropped to the bench, with Adam Mullan and Stephen Douglas regaining a place in the starting eleven.

The first meaningful chance fell to the Bannsiders after some neat link-up play from Jamie Glackin and Ben Doherty presented the latter with a shot at goal but his effort was deflected behind for a corner. James McLaughlin had a further chance blocked behind in the opening exchanges.

Stute grew into the game and ha a chance of their own on 16 minutes. A great move down the right wing released Joe McCready who fired a cross into the box which narrowly missed a touch from the advancing Gareth Brown.

The home side grabbed the lead on 20 minutes via Sean Leppard. Some poor defending from Coleraine allowed the centre-half to run into the six-yard-box and poke home Evan Tweed’s delivery from a free-kick.

The game looked all but over for before the half-hour mark as Gareth Brown slammed home a spectacular effort for Sean Connor’s side. The talented youngster caught Chris John’s off his line before unleashing an effort from almost the halfway line which which flew into the back of the net after a slip from the Coleraine stopper.

Institute were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty on the half hour mark as the lively Brown went down inside the area but referee Steven Gregg waved away the appeals much to the dismay of the home supporters.

At half-time the Bannsiders were trailing by two goals, leaving them a mountain to climb on Foyleside against North West rivals Institute.

Coleraine introduced Ian Parkhill after the restart with Eoin Bradley entering the fray shortly after as the Bannsiders looked for a lifeline.

The Ballymoney man almost reduced the deficit for the Bannsiders with a looping shot after Ben Doherty managed to slip the winger through o goal. With goal in his sights, Parkhill lifted the ball over the advancing Brown but his effort clipped the crossbar before going behind for a goal-kick.

Be Doherty failed to trouble Brown shortly after as he stabbed over from inside the area. Josh Carson had a further shot from the edge of the box but to no avail.

In the end, Institute proved worthy winners as Coleraine suffered their second defeat of the season on Foyleside.
