McGonigle: ‘We will take the point and move on’

JAMIE McGonigle spoke to Jonathan McNabb as his brace helped the Bannsiders claim a 3-3 draw against Crusaders at The Showgrounds…

After being two goals behind on two occasions, the striker believes the result is a ‘point gained’ as the top two sides in the Danske Bank Premiership had to settle for a draw.

“Before the game we wanted all three points, so you could say its two points dropped,” McGonigle said.

“But when you look at the manner of the game and the two mistakes we made, it’s a point gained.

“It was a great comeback at 2-0 and 3-1 and we nearly won it at the end.”

McGonigle’s second strike is a contender for goal of the season, but the Dungiven man reveals he does that in training and has set a target of 20 goals before the end of the season.

“The first one I think a few of us could have put in but it rolled towards me and I tapped it in,” McGonigle added.

“The second goal is something that I do in training and I’m confident of striking the ball from distance.

“I just needed to bring that into a match and thankfully it went in.

“That’s me up to 13 goals for the season, but I’d ideally like to get to 20.”

The home side nearly stole all three points at the end through Eoin Bradley and McGonigle thought the ball was going in.

“I thought it was going in,” McGonigle revealed.

“To be fair, Ward makes a great clearance regardless of whether the ball was for finding the net.

“I wanted the ball crossed into the back post as I was there for the hat-trick, but we take the point and move on.”

McGonigle and his team-mates turn their attentions to next weekend’s clash against Glentoran and the striker is expecting a ‘tough game’ at The Oval.

“There are 13 big games left in the league, but we will concentrate on what we’ve been doing all season,” McGonigle continued.

“We know Crusaders are a good side and it will be a good battle to see who finishes top.

“Glentoran are a tough side and with their game being off, I’m hopeful we can put it up to them and get all three points.”
