COLERAINE bounced back from their midweek disappointment with a well deserved point against Glentoran in a fiery 0-0 encounter.

The first big chance of the game fell the visitors’ way in the 7th minute, a brilliant nod down by Ruaidhri Donnelly from Bobby Burns’ pass led to the ball falling kindly for Daniel Purkis. The striker could only direct his effort straight at Gareth Deane from 10 yards out.

Glentoran continued to create the best chances in the early stages. On the 10th minute, wide man Conor McMenamin dribbled past Dean Jarvis before firing his effort towards the near post, forcing Deane into another smart save.

Despite the early pressure from the visitors, it was the Bannsiders who came closest to scoring. In the 17th minute, Josh Carson delivered a brilliant cross from the right hand side onto the head of Matthew Shevlin with the striker’s effort crashing against the post.

The first booking of the game came in the 24th minute after a poorly timed challenge from Bobby Burns on Aaron Jarvis resulted in the midfielder picking up a yellow card. The next big chance of the game came Coleraine’s way in the 40th minute, Shevlin passed the ball to Jack O’Mahony who set the ball into the path of Carson. The Antrim man headed towards goal before having his edge of the box effort well saved by Aaron McCarey.

The hosts picked up their first booking of the game on the 42nd minute when McMenamin was poorly challenged by Dean Jarvis forcing the Northern Ireland international to be taken off and replaced by Alistair Roy. 

Mick McDermott’s side also had the first chance of the second half as Seamus McCartan fired a dipping, low effort from the edge of the box towards the far corner forcing Deane to push the ball wide for a corner.

Minutes later, Coleraine came close to opening the scoring after good work from Carson down the right hand side resulted in him pulling the ball back to Lyndon Kane who saw his left footed effort go narrowly wide of the post.

Coleraine picked up their second yellow card of the game in the 68th minute after one too many fouls by Kane resulted in him eventually picking up a yellow card. Kane’s caution will keep him out of next week’s fixture away to Glenavon.

Shevlin picked up Coleraine’s third booking of the game on the 73rd minute after an aerial challenge with Patrick McClean resulted in the forward catching him with an elbow. McClean’s complaints about the challenge towards the referee saw him also pick up a yellow card. Shevlin’s booking will also see him miss the upcoming Glenavon match.

This entertaining, fiery encounter was concluded with McClean receiving a red card in stoppage time after picking up his second yellow card after stopping McDermott from counter attacking with a poor tackle on the halfway line.
